vyatta box needs password recovery

Have a vyatta box acting as firewall for a long time. Password unavailable so the vyatta box is inaccessible. Need to migrate to sn ASA. Can anyone provide clues?

these are the VyOS forums, and I can’t remember if it was an option already present in grub, but you can boot into single user mode to reset passwords

Greetings,

Well, if you have physical access to the Vyatta box and/or the hard drive or CF card inside (depending on which version of the Vyatta box you have), you have a couple of options:

  1. You should be able to get the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files and run johntheripper on a linux box against them to recover the existing password. NOTE: This will likely take a long time, so the next option is probably better…
  2. You can chroot into the drive from a linux box and just change the password(s) for the vyatta (and admin) account(s) using the standard passwd utility.

HTH. Let us know.
