Change serial console baud rate

Is there any way to change the serial console baud rate VyOS uses ? I tried the “normal” Linux way by changing the kernel console parameters in grub.conf and the inittab entry
(yes I know it says not to but ya gotta try something) and it works great up to the point to where the VyOS command line prompt is displayed where it then apparently reverts back
to 9600 baud (garbage characters displayed).

Also, is there some kind of reason for choosing this archaic baud rate ? Just to date myself completely I remember when I longed for 9600 baud in the even more archaic 300 baud
teletype days (ADM 3’s were available but they were very expensive). Now I’d just settle for running VyOS at 38400.
