Documentation .rst files, first line

I’m trying to somewhat familiarize myself with the .rst source for the documentation. Some files have a first line starting with .. — e.g.: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/vyos/vyos-documentation/master/docs/configuration/system/default-route.rst

What is the purpose of this line? Is it some internal referance?
