Download Bufferbloat FQ-CODEL

Hi guys!

I have a cable connection with 450mbps download and 50mbps for upload. I want to eliminate bufferbloat using fq_codel. It seems to work for Upload but not for Download. Is there something that I don’t understand in the configuration?

Which version/build are you using? I had the same issue, but I think it was fixed in 1.3 sometime after RC6 but before EPA1. I’m running EPA3 with no issues. I don’t know the status in 1.4. (BTW, I very quickly looked at the relevant lines in your config, and they basically look like mine. If you’re running a recent build, a more careful exam of your config might be needed.)

I’m running on the latest VyOS 1.3 beta.

Traffic seems to go to the shaper class, but it doesn’t remove bufferbloat…

Just a guess at this point, but have you experimented with your parameters (such as the codel-quantum)? I have a 100/10 cable connection, and after a lot of experimenting, I left them at the FQ-Codel defaults. FWIW, when I ran “show queueing input ifb0” my results looked essentially like yours.

One other thought is maybe this is a regression. I wonder if you’ll see the same issue w/ EPA3.

I can see the ping is very better when FQ_CODEL is activated and bandwidth is fully used. I start thinking that the ISP is throttling in the evening when everybody in the neighbor is using the network at same time.

I saw similar problems (running 1.2.6 at the time) on my setup trying to use redirect ifb0 on my pppoe interface.
Everything worked, but I wasn’t seeing any shaping.

In the end I applied the rule directly to the pppoe interface. Not 100% optimal, but it worked for me.

I never ddi get around to fully debugging it or logging a ticket though.

But try applying the fq_codel rules to the interface directly and seeing if that works - then if you can prove that you could log a Phabricator ticket.

Maybe redirect doesn’t survive pppoe interface going up/down.
Use tc show commands to see if counters increment on ifb interface.
Assigning policy to eth interface might have major drawback: It only sees ppp traffic, so all IP flows might end up in a single fqcodel queue

Thanks guys for your help but the problems doesn’t come from traffic shaping but the cable ISP that has a lot of problem at peak hour… I will contact them to look with them what’s wrong.
