Have you thought of Hacktoberfest 2020 as a way to attract some contributions?
VyOS doesn’t seem to be an easy project, but still. You just need to tag newbie-ready self-contained issues with “Hacktoberfest”. And perhaps a few #Hacktoberfest or #Hacktoberfest2020 tweets or LinkedIn posts. Reviewing the onboarding docs would be nice as well.
Finding and tagging those newbie-ready issues and/or updating the onboarding docs would be worth by themselves, I believe.
