Protectli VP6650 RJ45 interfaces not showing up, only SFP+

Hi all, I just got a Protectli VP6650 in and installed VyOS 1.3.6 on it. I’m having trouble using the 4x 2.5GbE RJ45 interfaces - they’re not showing up when I run show interfaces or in ip addr output. The 2x SFP+ interfaces show up and I can configure them as expected. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I should add, I think I am seeing them when I lspci, the first 2 are the SFP+ and the last 4 I assume are the RJ45:

Try latest 1.5-rolling just to verify if its the kernel or some other option:

If I boot the rolling image will my config work as-is and will I be able to switch back to the 1.3.6 image using the CLI without any hacking around? Only asking to be sure, since 1.3 to 1.5 is a big bump

The driver used is named “igc” and exists in-tree only after Linux kernel 5.16.18.

Im not sure what its named in the out-of-tree drivers from Intel (quick search wont give any “igc” in the out-of-tree homepage over at Intel Ethernet Drivers and Utilities - Browse Files at SourceForge.net ).

So my best guess is that VyOS 1.3.6 wont support the Intel I226-V nic.

Regarding 1.5-rolling I think you should be safe if you download that ISO and use Etcher to put it into a USB-drive and then boot your box from that USB-drive and run VyOS as a “liveboot”. This should be sufficient to get an output of dmesg, lspci, lsmod and verifiy how that detects your Intel I226-V nic.

Edit: Digging through Linux kernel sources the first trace of the igc is for Linux Kernel 4.20-rc1 from 2018-10-17 according to (unless I have misread something):

Edit2: And according to No I225 Linux Driver (IGC) available? - Intel Community its plausible that the igc driver didnt exist until Linux kernel 5.16.18.

I would suggest building your own 1.4 (it’s very easy) and trying that.
Much less of a config jump from 1.3.6->1.4.0-epa

FYI you can filter the dmesg output for your Ethernet devices by using grep along with the pipe operator.

As tjh said you can build your own 1.4 rolling following the how to’s.

Had the same Problems with 1.3.5 and ofc. With 1.5 it works. Will try 1.4-epa if I find the time.
