I’ve noticed that under heavy network load only the first core of a 4 core cpu has a high load. yhe other cores are at near 2- 3 % workload.
How many interfaces do you got and between which of these do you have the high load of traffic?
Also which vendor/model of the NIC’s do you got?
As I recall depending on NIC and drivers you will usually end up with one core per interface.
So if you push traffic one way between eth0 and eth1 that will usually just utilize a single core. So in short and generally speaking fast cores is more important than many cores.
You can try laborate with the different offloading options and see if any of those will help.
