the repo needs a fix and there are a few pull request also on it.
is broken it will download the image from the old s3 location
“url”: “https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3-us.vyos.io/rolling/current/vyos-rolling-latest.iso”}
Path to local ISO image (default: /tmp/vyos.iso):
-e iso_local=path
Example:
-e iso_local=/tmp/vyos/custom_image.iso

It is not a workaround, it is the correct way to do it 
There is no ‘latest image’ for now.
